WYVE Has Best Equipment

Owned and operated by the Wythe County Broadcasting Company, WYVE is completely furnished with the most modern equipment available for radio broadcast. Its paraphernalia is unexcelled in quality and signal strength by any on the market today and the station's equipment tests, which have been conducted during the past 10 days, were most gratifying. Communications have been received from listeners as far away as West Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, New Hampshire, Vermont, Iowa, Chicago and Buffalo, N.Y. as well as from distant sections of Virginia. Two surprising facts were brought to light by the tests. One is that some listeners in the remote cities reported they received the signals on a five-tube home set, while the other is that the greatest number of responses came from faraway New York City.In accordance with FCC regulations these tests were conducted between midnight and daylight when the signal is much stronger because of the lack of interference and better carrying power, so of course, daytime reception will not cover as wide an area. WYVE's officials said, however, that they expect their signal to be very strong in all neighboring cities.WYVE's studios are located in the heart of downtown Wytheville, instead of at the transmitter, for the convenience of the staff, talent and visitors. Occupying almost the entire right-hand side of the Hobert N. Grubb Building's second floor, the station's broadcast quarters include three studios and four business offices plus a newsroom and an observation lobby from which vantage point visitors are welcome to watch broadcasts.Station Manager Arthur M. Gates, Jr., said WYVE's tower, transmitter and ground system, located on Cove Road, property purchased from Miss Flora Mae Snavely covers nearly five acres of land. The guyed tower has an overall height of 207 feet, while the ground system embraces nine miles of copper wire buried six inches under the ground.
